Mario has extensive experience representing the principal participants in Canadian and cross-border corporate and financial institution restructurings and insolvencies. Mario has been one of Canada's leading restructuring and insolvency lawyers with key roles in many of the country's largest and most complex restructuring proceedings, including CanWest Publishing, Nortel Networks, Stelco, and others. Since 1987, Mario’s practice has spanned all financial and other aspects of distress situations. Within the scope of his practice, Mario has acted for all participants, with extensive involvement on behalf of both creditor (institutional and non-institutional, trade and landlord), investor and corporate clients. As a result, he has established working relationships with financial institutions, financial intermediaries, and consulting, investment and accounting firms that are active in distress situations. In addition, Mario has extensive experience as a corporate and strategic advisor to senior management, the board, and special committees grappling with issues and opportunities arising from distress circumstances. Mario joined RECON after honing his expertise as a partner in the restructuring groups of two leading national law firms and at a boutique.
On June 30, 2017, Stelco Inc. (Stelco), formerly U.S. Steel Canada Inc., emerged from Companies’ Creditors Arrangements Act (CCAA) proceedings through the implementation of a CCAA plan.
